Zarbuz Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Synonym: Zarbuzskaya Suite, Зарбузская свита
Reference section:
Lithology and Thickness
It is represented by well-sorted quartzitic fine-grained sandstones, in the middle of which, as well as in the upper part in the Zaalaysky Range, there are layers of brownish-red clays. The sandstones are light gray at the base, becoming brownish-pink in the upper half. For the sandstones, the prevalence of fine sand fraction (82-87%) is characteristic, there are significant fluctuations in the content of carbonate material - from 15 to 60-65%, with a transition in the southern part of the area (Shagon, Yakhshobolo, Yakhshosaidun) into sandy limestones. For the sandstones of the Obiniouskaya zone, a distinctive feature is the presence of horizontal fine stratification. To the east (Vasmikuhskaya zone of the Southwestern Darvaz, Northern Darvaz, Zaalaysky Range), various types of stratification prevail in the sandstones with the prevalence of large gentle oblique unidirectional and multidirectional; to the east, the sorting of terrigenous material worsens. The thickness of the suite ranges from 210 to 850 m.
In the Zaalaysky district, in the mountains of Peter I to the Shkeldarin Fm and to the Zarbuz Fm, by position in the section, are conditionally attributed, following A.K. Kafarsky and Pyzyanov (1963), varicolored sandstones, claystones, and clay shales with a thickness of 600-800, in places up to 1200 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
They conformably overlie the analogs of the Lower and Middle Jurassic Gring Fm (гринrской Свиты)
Upper contact
It conformably overlain by the Upper Jurassic Sarynamak Fm (сарынамакской Свитой).
Regional extent
This sandstone layer clearly correlates with the coeval Kugitang Fm limestones of the southwestern spurs of the Gissar Range according to regional paleogeographic, formational, and rhythmostratigraphic constructions. Previously, these rocks were considered the middle part of the Sorbulak Fm (сорбу1акской свиты,) established by I.E. Gubin, conditionally attributed to the Jurassic (Grigoriev, 1958; Geol. USSR, vol. 24, 1959).
GeoJSON
Fossils
The basis of the complex is Classopollis pollen (up to 95%). Constant components are the pollen of plants Dissacites sp., Araucariacites sp., Cerebropollenites mesozoicus Coup. and spores Cyathidites minor Coup., Matonisporites equiexinus Coup., Osmundacidites welmani Coup in Darvaz district. In the In the Zaalaysky district, organic remains have not been found, the age is conditional, it is assumed by analogy with the sections described above from the Southwestern Darvaz.
